3G+ speeds in more places

TELUS' 3G+ network will provide access to network speeds of up to 21Mbps when browsing the Internet, downloading files, tethering and using TELUS business applications.  Because TELUS' 3G+ devices will never revert to slower technology, TELUS will offer you 3G+ speed throughout our entire 3G+ network.

As an existing TELUS client, what happens to my service?

Rest easy

Using the existing CDMA and Mike (iDEN) networks? TELUS will continue to offer its CDMA and Mike (iDEN) services in parallel with 3G+, providing Canadians with more choice for years to come. Today, over 6 million TELUS clients subscribe to CDMA and Mike (iDEN) services. The addition of the new 3G+ network does not mean you will need to switch devices or change your services in any way; simply remain on CDMA and Mike (iDEN) or choose to move to one of our 3G+ devices with our simple upgrade process.***

** Based on total square kilometres of national HSPA and HSPA+  coverage as of October 2009.
***Existing CDMA clients with rate plans that include data and/or data add-on features will need to upgrade their rate plan/feature to a new suite of similarly priced HSPA data plan options.
TELUS plans to upgrade from HSPA to HSPA+ service in the Ottawa area and province of Quebec by Spring 2010, and to have HSPA+ coverage in the provinces of Manitoba (beyond Winnipeg) and Saskatchewan by the end of 2010.

Canada's largest 3G+ network*

TELUS is committed to offering the best selection of wireless devices and service experience possible no matter what technology is running in the background. The new 3G+ network is based on the most advanced wireless technology available.

HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is a family of mobile broadband technologies based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) standard, comprising High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) and HSPA+.

HSPA+ is the most advanced version available, upgraded to provide higher "broadband-like" data speeds.

Facts about TELUS’ 3G+ network:

  • Will run on 1900/850 MHz frequency bands and uses standard 3GPP SIM cards.
  • Will offer theoretical peak download speeds of 21.6 Mbps and 5.76 upload speeds.
Actual speed may vary by device and due to congestion, distance from the cell, local conditions, hardware, software and other factors, therefore typical speeds will range from 4-6 mbps (download) and 2-4 mbps (upload).
  • Network infrastructure has been purpose-built from the ground up.
  • Will use separate channels (parts of the wireless signal) for the data and voice components, so that capacity is reserved for data.
  • New national network will be the largest 3G+ network in Canada, offering coverage for 93% of the Canadian population.
  • Because TELUS' 3G+ devices will never revert to slower technology, we will offer clients 3G+ speed across our entire HSPA+ network.

What does this mean for TELUS?

The addition of 3G+ to the TELUS multi-network strategy (which already includes our CDMA and Mike (iDEN) networks) will allow us to offer state-of-the-art choices for Canadians, while we follow the most advantageous development path to our chosen 4G network technology, LTE (Long Term Evolution). We will continue to operate the CDMA and Mike (iDEN) networks in parallel with HSPA, providing Canadians with more choice for years to come as we plan our evolution to LTE.
