1. What is GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It provides the real-time location of Mike handsets and 1X vehicle installed modems that provide the information you need to improve agility, increase productivity and efficiencies and enhance service levels within your business.

To reap the benefits of this technology, you will require specialized software to interpret the location information and present it back to you in a meaningful way. TELUS GPS solutions can help.

  2. What types of solutions does TELUS provide for business clients?

TELUS GPS solutions are currently available in four ‘graduated tiers’ from handset based navigation (currently available in AB, BC and Southern ON), handset tracking, handset tracking with dispatch capabilities and fleet tracking. These categories use either GPS or Assisted GPS (AGPS) location based technologies.

  3. What are the differences between GPS and Assisted AGPS?

GPS determines the location of a mobile device by triangulating its position from at least three satellites orbiting around our planet. This technology is used to power Tracking and Dispatch solutions on Mike handsets and Fleet Tracking on our 1X/CDMA devices.

AGPS combines the reliability of triangulating the position from at least three satellites with the added help of our mobile network to increase accuracy. It works indoor and outdoor and can use GPS or AGPS to triangulate the current position. It also reduces the power requirements as assistance data is provided to the device. For real-time driving directions with TELUS Navigator uses AGPS technology to provide very accurate location information is required to provide you with turn-by-turn driving instructions.

  4. How accurate is this technology?

The accuracy of the location information you receive from GPS services will vary based on device, geographical and local conditions – whether your handset is indoors or outdoors, surrounded by tall buildings, etc.  In optimal conditions, the location of a GPS enabled device will be accurate to within a few meters.

AGPS will improve the accuracy of locating mobile devices and reduce the time it takes to determine the position.  Additional TELUS AGPS services will be available soon.

Generally, the following technologies will provide these ranges of accuracy:

    • AGPS (typically outdoors in suburban and rural environments) within 10-50 meters
    • Hybrid / Network Triangulation (typically indoors and in high density urban environments) - within 50-500 meters
    • Mobile Site Location– 500-1000 meters

  5. How long does it take to determine my location?

TELUS uses advanced technology to provide you with the most precise location information. You can expect to get your location fix within 3 to 30 seconds using our AGPS and up to 2 minutes using traditional GPS.
