TELUS Information Security Solutions recognized for global leadership in Web Application Firewall development

The world’s most preeminent security product testing lab – The NSS Group – has awarded TELUS Information Security Solutions “NSS Approved” status for our AssureLogic Web Application Firewall (WAF) product.

The NSS Group operates the most stringent and thorough third-party independent certification programs for security products. “NSS Approved” status indicates the product has successfully completed all exhaustive testing to the required standard in three main areas: performance and reliability, security and effectiveness and usability.

Developed by Assurent Secure Technologies (a leading Canadian provider of IT security services we acquired in April), AssureLogic is a WAF product that offers businesses using Web-based applications (such as web banking and on-line reservations) a sophisticated level of protection from a broad category of security threats such as attacks from hackers and new forms of malicious worms and viruses, which traditional solutions like firewalls and intrusion prevention systems are not effective in preventing.

For TELUS, this achievement is significant. NSS certification is recognized world-wide as being the most desirable and essential when it comes to security products and is highly valued by customers when making purchasing decisions. To put this into perspective, many products tested fail completely or only receive an “NSS Tested” rating and only about four products each year achieve “NSS Approved” status.  AssureLogic is the first WAF product to achieve “NSS Approved” status, which speaks volumes about the unique value we’re able to offer customers looking for this type of product.

The Assurent team joined Mark Noppe’s Business Resiliency team in April, which was recently renamed TELUS Information Security Solutions. Information security is an increasingly critical issue for businesses as security threats continue to proliferate at an incredible pace.  Through acquiring Assurent, we are tapping into their expertise and thought leadership to enhance our capabilities in this important area of our business.  Organizations that are ‘backed by TELUS' will receive the strongest IT security value proposition in Canada.  Unique products like the AssureLogic WAF are a terrific example of how we’re delivering on this promise to our customers while differentiating TELUS in the IT security services market.

Congratulations to our team members from Assurent Secure Technologies on this outstanding achievement!

TELUS Vice-President and Chief Security Officer named Canadian Security Director of the Year

AURORA, ONT. — June 27, 2006 The editorial advisory board of Canadian Security Magazine has chosen Gene McLean, Vice-President and Chief Security Officer at TELUS Corporation as Security Director of the Year.

“We received an impressive number of nominations for a group of extremely qualified and experienced individuals from across the country,” said Jennifer Brown, Editor of Canadian Security Magazine. “After considerable debate with the editorial advisory board, it was determined Mr. McLean best represented the qualities individuals in the security industry aspire to in reaching the senior level of the profession.”

The competition was sponsored by Anixter, a leading supplier of communications products used to connect voice, video, data and security systems.

“We were thrilled to have Anixter sponsoring the first ever Canadian Security Director of the year and they extend their congratulations to Mr. McLean,” said Frank Shoniker, Publisher of Canadian Security and Director of Sales and Marketing for CLB Media.

McLean received five nominations — more than any other nominee — and those who nominated him include professionals and peers from organizations such as KPMG, The Canadian Bankers Association and the Society for The Policing of Cyberspace.

Those who nominated McLean cited his “calm and determined leadership” during the 2005 labour dispute at TELUS, a leading national telecommunications company. McLean’s on-going work on a smart card project in which a multitude of card access systems will be consolidated onto a single card access was also included in his nomination.

McLean also created the Information Protection Centre within corporate security at TELUS, which works closely with the TELUS IT department to help ensure that the company’s corporate information assets are appropriately protected.

“In accordance with Gene’s security philosophy, there is no divide or fragmentation between physical and information security at TELUS,” said one of McLean's nominators, Richard Cohen, President, RSC Strategic Connections, an independent advisory firm on national and international security issues.

Nominations came for security directors and managers in the public and private sector including banking, large utilities, post-secondary institutions, health care and manufacturing.

First runner up was Leo Manos, Director of Security Services with the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, who was nominated for his significant work in upgrading the security systems within the facility. Second runner up was Bob Gauvreau, Manager of Corporate Security with the City of Ottawa who was nominated for leading a parks protection initiative within the city.

McLean will be featured in the September issue of Canadian Security Magazine and presented with his award at the ASIS International Conference in San Diego, Sept. 24, 2006 and at Security Canada Central in October at the Toronto Congress Center.
