BlackBerry® Z10 4G LTE - How to manage your data usage and avoid additional charges

o get the most out of your rate plan or data add-on, you can manage data usage on your BlackBerry®, and avoid unexpected data charges.

What you need to know

Visit http://mobile.telus.com to access current data usage information directly from your BlackBerry. Log in using your TELUS account username and password.

Applications running in the background continue to transmit data without any type of notification.

Internet activities such as streaming content will consume a significant amount of data. Examples are social networking apps, location-based services (GPS), push email, over-the-air application updates, news and weather apps, and streaming audio applications.

Track your data usage

Using your BlackBerry

You can track your data usage directly from your BlackBerry if you have an existing TELUS online account. Register if you don't have one.

  1. From your Home screen, tap Browser.
  2. Go to http://mobile.telus.com.
  3. Log in using your registered email address and password.
  4. Scroll down to Data Usage.
  5. Your total data usage during the current bill cycle is displayed. If you do not know how much data is included in your rate plan, select Rate Plan Details to see a list of included services.

Using your computer

  1. Launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Billing tab.
  4. Click View e.Bill.
  5. Write down the Bill date located in the first box.
    NOTE: The Bill date is the last day of your previous billing cycle. The next day is the first day for the current billing cycle.
  6. Click Data usage under the row of tabs.
  7. Select From.
    • In the from field, enter the first day for the current billing cycle.
    • In the to field, enter today's date.
  8. Click Search.
  9. Your total data usage for the current bill cycle is displayed in kilobytes.

Enable data usage notifications

You can set up data usage notifications and receive text messages when you reach specific data usage thresholds with most TELUS rate plans and data add-ons.

NOTE: If you have a Voice and Data Flex plan, or Data Flex Add-on, data usage notifications are automatically enabled on your account and do not need to be set up.

You can receive up to 5 text message notifications at:

  • 75% of your monthly data allotment
  • 95% of your monthly data allotment
  • *$10 of overage/pay-per-use charge
  • *$50 of overage/pay-per-use charge
  • *$200 of overage/pay-per-use charge.

* Voice and Data Flex plans and Data Flex Add-ons do not provide data usage notifications at these thresholds.

To enable data usage notifications, do the following.

  1. From your computer, launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Billing tab.
  4. Click the Data usage tab.
  5. Select YES - send me an SMS to notify me of my data usage.
  6. Click Submit.
    NOTE: Some plans are not eligible to receive TELUS Data Usage Notifications. Enabling TELUS Data Usage Notifications may not work for your plan.

Turn off Mobile Hotspot

Turn off Mobile Hotspot when you're not using it. Do the following.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select Network Connections.
  3. Select Mobile Hotspot.
  4. Turn Off Mobile Hotspot.
  5. Your Mobile Hotspot network is turned off.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network

If your BlackBerry is Wi-Fi capable, you can connect to an available Wi-Fi network and minimize the consumption of data included with your rate plan or data add-on. Using a Wi-Fi connection is recommended when you're downloading multimedia files such as music and video.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  2. Select Network Connections.
  3. Select Wi-Fi.
  4. Turn On Wi-Fi.
  5. The phone scans for available wireless networks and displays their names and security settings (Open or Secured with either WEP or WPA).
  6. Select a network, then:
    • If the network is open, you are automatically connected to the network.
    • If the network is secured; type the password, then tap Connect.
  7. The desired network name now appears as Connected on your BlackBerry.
  8. Your BlackBerry is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Turn off data services

You can turn off data services on your BlackBerry. Turning off data services disables features such as email, Web browsing, and social networking apps such as Facebook on your BlackBerry®. You can still place and receive calls, and use text messaging services.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.
  2. Select Network Connections.
  3. Select Mobile Network.
  4. Turn Off Data Services.
  5. Data services are turned off.
