iPhone 4S - How to manage your data storage and avoid additional charges

To get the most out of your rate plan or data add-on, you can manage data usage on your iPhone, and avoid unexpected data charges.

What you need to know

  • Visit http://mobile.telus.com to access current data usage information directly from your iPhone. Log in using your TELUS account username and password.
  • Use the TELUS Data Calculator to estimate your usage and choose the appropriate rate plan.
  • Applications running in the background continue to transmit data without any type of notification.
  • Internet activities such as streaming content will consume a significant amount of data. Examples are social networking apps, location-based services (GPS), push email, over-the-air application updates, news and weather apps, and streaming audio applications.

Track your data usage

Using your iPhone

You can track your data usage directly from your iPhone, if you have an existing TELUS online account. Register if you don't have one.

  1. Tap Safari.
  2. Go to http://mobile.telus.com.
  3. Log in using your registered email address and password.
  4. Scroll down to Data Usage.

Your total data usage during the current bill cycle is displayed. If you do not know how much data is included in your rate plan, select Rate Plan Details to see a list of included services.

Using your computer

  1. Launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Usage tab.
  4. Click View data usage.
  5. Select Current usage cycle from the drop down menu.
  6. Your data usage during the current bill cycle is displayed in Megabytes.

Enable data usage notifications

You can set up data usage notifications and receive text messages when you reach specific data usage thresholds with most TELUS rate plans and data add-ons.

NOTE: If you have a Voice and Data Flex plan, or Data Flex Add-on, data usage notifications are automatically enabled on your account and do not need to be set up.

You can receive up to 5 text message notifications at:

  • 75% of your monthly data allotment
  • 95% of your monthly data allotment
  • *$10 of overage/pay-per-use charge
  • *$50 of overage/pay-per-use charge
  • *$200 of overage/pay-per-use charge.

* Voice and Data Flex plans and Data Flex Add-ons do not provide data usage notifications at these thresholds.

To enable data usage notifications, do the following.

  1. From your computer, launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Usage tab.
  4. Click the Data notification tab.
  5. Select ON.
  6. Click Update.
    NOTE: Some plans are not eligible to receive TELUS Data Usage Notifications. Enabling TELUS Data Usage Notifications may not work for your plan.

Join a Wi-Fi network

You can join an available Wi-Fi network and minimize the consumption of data included with your rate plan or data add-on. Using a Wi-Fi connection is recommended when you're downloading multimedia files such as music and video.

Turn off auto-sync and push notifications

Turn off push notifications and over-the-air syncing to efficiently manage mobile data usage.

Turn off Personal Hotspot

You can turn off Portable Hotspot when you're not using it. Do the following.

Turn off data services

You can turn off data services on your iPhone to prevent data usage. Turning off data services disables features such as email, Web browsing, and social networking apps such as Facebook on your iPhone. You can still place and receive calls, and use text messaging services.

  • Data services are turned off.
