Nexus 4 - How to back up your smartphone

You can back up your contacts list, and synchronize your calendar, with your Gmail account.

If you've set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone, it should automatically be backed up with your Gmail account.

You don't have a Gmail email account set up on your smartphone

If you haven't set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone, do the following.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Accounts and select Add account.
  4. Select Google.
  5. Tap Existing.
  6. Type your Gmail email address.
  7. Type your Gmail password.
  8. Tap the right arrow.
  9. Tap OK.
  10. Tap Not now.
  11. Tap Not now.
  12. Select the options you would like to synchronize with your Google account.
  13. Tap the right arrow.
  14. Your smartphone contacts and calendar are synchronized with your Gmail account.

You've already set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone

If you've already set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone but would like to ensure it's backed up with your Gmail account, do the following.

  1. Select your personal data you would like to sync
  2. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Scroll down to Accounts and select Google.
  5. Select the desired Gmail account.
  6. Select the content you'd like to back up. A check mark appears next to each selected item.
  7. Tap Menu at the top right corner of your screen.
  8. Select Sync now to confirm your selections.
  9. Your smartphone contacts and calendar are synchronized with your Gmail account.

Back up app data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to Google servers

From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.

Tap Settings.

Select Backup & reset.

Check the Back up my data checkbox.

Select Backup account.

Set the desired backup account.

Place a check mark in the Automatic Restore checkbox.

Your smartphone settings are backed up to Google servers.
