Nexus 4 - How to manage your data usage and avoid additional charges

To get the most out of your rate plan or data add-on, you can manage data usage on your Android smartphone, and avoid unexpected data charges.

What you need to know

  • Visit http://mobile.telus.com to access current data usage information directly from your smartphone. Log in using your TELUS account username and password.
  • Applications running in the background continue to transmit data without any type of notification.
  • Internet activities such as streaming content will consume a significant amount of data.
  • Some examples are:
    • Social Networking apps,
    • Location Bases Services (GPS),
    • Push Email,
    • Over the Air application updates,
    • News and Weather apps,
    • and streaming audio applications.

Enable data limits on your smartphone

You can set your smartphone to display warnings when your data usage approaches the amount of data included with your rate plan. You can also set up your smartphone to automatically disable data services once you've reached that amount.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Data Usage.
  4. Place a check mark in the Set mobile data limit checkbox.
  5. Tap OK.
  6. Tap the date next to Data usage cycle, then select Change cycle.
  7. Select the first day of your billing cycle. If you're not sure of these dates, log in to your account and view your e.Bill for details.
  8. Tap Set.
  9. Slide the red limit bar to match the amount of data included in your rate plan.
  10. Slide the orange alert bar to the desired amount of used data before your smartphone displays a warning.
  11. Data limits are turned on.

Track your data usage

Using your smartphone

You can track your data usage directly from your smartphone if you have an existing TELUS online account. Register if you don't have one.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to http://mobile.telus.com.
  3. Log in using your registered email address and password.
  4. Scroll down to Data Usage.
  5. Your total data usage during the current bill cycle is displayed. If you do not know how much data is included in your rate plan, select Rate Plan Details to see a list of included services.

Using your computer

  1. Launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Usage tab.
  4. Click the Data usage tab.
  5. Select the desired time period.
  6. Click View.
  7. Your total data usage for the current bill cycle is displayed in megabytes.

Enable data usage notifications

You can set up data usage notifications and receive text messages when you reach specific data usage thresholds with most TELUS rate plans and data add-ons.

NOTE: Notifications aren't applicable to Cost Assure*, Mobile High Speed Flex Plan, Data Pooling, Data Sharing Rate Plan or data add-ons.

You can receive up to 4 text message notifications at:

  • 75% of your monthly data allotment
  • 95% of your monthly data allotment
  • *$10 of overage/pay-per-use charge
  • *$50 of overage/pay-per-use charge

* If your Cost Assure Data plan/add-on only includes Canadian data, you will receive notification messages as you reach the pay per-use thresholds for US or international usage.

To enable data usage notifications, do the following.

  1. From your computer, launch your Web browser.
  2. Log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
  3. Click the Usage tab.
  4. Click the Data notification tab.
  5. Select ON.
  6. Click Update.
    NOTE: Some plans are not eligible to receive TELUS Data Usage Notifications. Enabling TELUS Data Usage Notifications may not work for your plan.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network

You can connect to an available Wi-Fi network and minimize the consumption of data included with your rate plan or data add-on. Using a Wi-Fi connection is recommended when you're downloading multimedia files such as music and video.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Wi-Fi.
  4. Turn Wi-Fi On.
  5. Your smartphone scans for available wireless networks and displays their names and security settings (Open network or Secured).
  6. If you have connected to one of these networks in the past, your smartphone will connect to that one automatically.
  7. Select a network, then:
    • If the network is Open, tap Connect. You are automatically connected to the network.
    • If the network is Secured, type the network password, then tap Connect.
  8. The desired Wi-Fi network appears as Connected on your smartphone.
  9. Your smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Turn off Portable Wi-Fi hotspot

You can turn off Portable Wi-Fi hotspot when you're not using it. Do the following.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select More.
  4. Select Tethering & portable hotspot.
  5. Clear the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot check box.
  6. Portable Wi-Fi hotspot is turned off.

Turn off data services

You can turn off data services on your smartphone to prevent data usage. Turning off data services disables features such as email, Web browsing, and social networking apps such as Facebook on your smartphone. You can still place and receive calls, and use text messaging services.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Data usage.
  4. Turn OFF Mobile data.
  5. Data services are turned off.
