Nexus 4 - How to update your smartphone software

As of December 10, 2013 a new software version is available for the Nexus 5.

NOTE: Google is releasing this update in stages. Your smartphone will receive a notification when this update becomes available to you.

To check for available software updates, do the following.

Before you update your smartphone, you need to know your current software version.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Menu .
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Select About Phone .
  4. If your Android version is 4.4.2 , you don't need an upgrade.

If you need to upgrade your firmware, try one of the following methods.

Check for automatic update notifications

Typically, you will receive a notification anytime a firmware or software update becomes available. To check for notifications and install updates, do the following.

  1. On the top left corner of the Home screen, an update notification icon appears.
  2. Swipe down on the icon. The Notifications screen displays.
  3. Tap System update available .
  4. Tap Download .
  5. When the download is finished, tap Restart & Install .
  6. The available update is installed.

Manually check for system updates

You can manually check for available firmware or software updates. Do the following:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Menu .
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Select About Phone .
  4. Select System updates .
  5. Tap Check Now .
  6. If your system is currently up to date it will display, “Your system is up to date” .
