Back up or transfer your contacts and synchronize your calendar

You can back up your contacts list, and synchronize your calendar, with your Gmail account.

If you've set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone, it should automatically be backed up with your Gmail account.

You don't have a Gmail email account set up on your smartphone

If you haven't set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone, do the following.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Accounts and sync.
  • Tap Add account.
  • Select Google.
  • Tap Existing.
  • NOTE: Tap New if you do not have a Gmail or Google account.
  • Type your Gmail or Google username and password.
  • From your keypad, tap the Enter key.
  • Tap Sign in.
  • Tap Skip.
  • Leave all the options selected and tap Next.

Your smartphone contacts and calendar are synchronized with your Gmail account.

You've already set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone

If you've already set up a Gmail email account on your smartphone, but would like to ensure it's backed up with your Gmail account, do the following.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Accounts and sync.
  • Ensure Accounts and sync option is On.
  • Select the desired Gmail account.
  • Select the content you'd like backed up with your Gmail account.

Your smartphone contacts and calendar are synchronized with your Gmail account.

Change the language settings

You can change the language used on your smartphone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Language and input.
  • Tap Language.
  • Select the desired language.

The language on your smartphone is changed.

Change your ringtone

You can change the ringtones that play on your smartphone.

Change your ringtone for incoming calls

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Sound.
  • Select Device ringtone.
  • Select the desired ringtone.
  • Tap OK.

Your ringtone is changed.

Change your ringtone for incoming messages

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Sound.
  • Select Default notifications.
  • Select the desired ringtone.
  • Tap OK.

Your ringtone is changed.

Change your wallpaper

You can change the wallpaper that displays on your smartphone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Wallpaper.
  • Select the desired screen.
  • Select the folder which contains the desired wallpaper image.
  • Select the desired wallpaper image.
  • Resize the image and tap Done.

Your wallpaper is changed.

Check available storage space

To view the amount of available storage space on your smartphone, do the following.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Storage.
  • The amount of total and available storage space is displayed.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network

To set up Wi-Fi™ on your smartphone and connect to a wireless network:

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Wi-Fi.
  • Turn On Wi-Fi. The phone scans for available wireless networks and displays their names and security settings (Open network or Secured). If you have connected to one of these networks in the past, your phone will connect to that one automatically.
  • Select a network, then:
  • If the network is open, tap Connect. You are automatically connected to the network.
  • If the network is Secured, type the network password, then tap Connect.
  • The desired Wi-Fi network appears as Connected on your smartphone.
  • Wi-Fi is set up on your smartphone.

Lock and unlock your smartphone screen

Locking your smartphone screen prevents accidental or unauthorized use. While it is locked, you can still call 911.

To set up a security password or PIN for the first time

For enhanced security, you can set up your smartphone to require a password or PIN each time you want to use it. To set up your smartphone for password or PIN protection, do the following.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Security.
  • Select Screen lock.
  • Select one of the following high security options:
  • PIN: Select this option if you wish to use a numeric code to lock and unlock your smartphone.
  • Password: Select this option if you wish to use a typed word to lock and unlock your smartphone.
  • Type the desired PIN or Password.
  • Tap Continue.
  • Confirm your PIN or Password.
  • Tap OK.
  • Your smartphone is secured with a password or PIN.

To lock your smartphone screen

  • Press the Power button, located on the right edge of your smartphone.
  • Your smartphone screen is locked.
  • To unlock your smartphone screen
  • Press the Power button, located on the right edge of your smartphone.
  • Type the screen lock PIN or Password.
  • Tap OK.
  • Your smartphone screen is unlocked.

Manually select a network while travelling outside Canada

If you want to select a network manually while travelling abroad, do the following:

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select More settings.
  • Select Mobile networks.
  • Select Network operators. Your smartphone scans for available networks.
  • Select a network from the list of available networks.
  • Your smartphone uses the new network.

Reset your smartphone to its original state

You may want to reset your smartphone to the original factory settings if you are trying to resolve issues with your smartphone (for example, a frozen screen) or if you are giving the smartphone to someone else.

CAUTION: This should only be done as a last resort. Resetting your smartphone deletes your ringtones, contacts, pictures, messages, and other downloaded content.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Back up and reset.
  • Select Factory data reset.
  • Check the Format USB storage check box.
  • Tap Reset device.
  • Tap Erase everything.
  • The smartphone is reset to the original factory settings.

Set up your smartphone as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot

You can set up your smartphone as a Wi-Fi™ source for computers and other smartphones with Wi-Fi capability.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select More settings.
  • Select Tethering and portable hotspot.
  • Select Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Tap Configure.
  • Type the name you would like to use to identify your Wi-Fi hotspot in the Network SSID field.
  • Select the Security type from the drop down list. We recommend WPA2 PSK encryption for enhanced security.
  • Type the desired Password for the Wi-Fi hotspot connection.
  • NOTE: All Wi-Fi capable devices which connect to your hotspot will require this password. It is recommended to use a password for security purposes in order to prevent unauthorized access which may result in additional data charges.
  • Tap Save.
  • Turn on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot at the top of the screen.
  • Your portable Wi-Fi hotspot is set up.

Turn off data connection to the Internet

Turning off data services disables features such as email, Web browsing, and social networking apps such as Facebook.

See the steps below to disable data services.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select More settings.
  • Select Mobile networks.
  • Clear the Use packet data check box.
  • Data services are turned off.

Manage your data usage while travelling outside Canada

Connect to a Wi-Fi network

You can connect to an available Wi-Fi network and minimize the consumption of data included with your rate plan or data add-on while travelling outside Canada.

Turn off data services while travelling outside Canada

You can disable data services on your smartphone while travelling outside Canada. Turning off data services disables features such as email, Web browsing, and social networking apps such as Facebook on your smartphone. You can still place and receive calls, and use text messaging services.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select More settings.
  • Select Mobile networks.
  • Clear the Data roaming check box to avoid accidental data usage while travelling.
  • Data services are turned off while travelling outside Canada.

Update the software on your smartphone

Keep your smartphone running efficiently by using the latest available software.

Before you update your smartphone, you need to know your current software version.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Select About device.
  • If your Android version is 4.1.1, you don't need an upgrade.
  • If you need to upgrade your firmware, try one of the following methods.

Manually check for system updates

You can manually check for software updates. Connect to a Wi-Fi network before proceeding.

  • From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Select About device.
  • Select Software update.
  • Tap Update.
  • If the message Your system is currently up to date displays, no updates are available at the current time.
  • Tap OK.
  • Tap Download.
  • Tap Install.
  • Your smartphone is updated.
